Carving Scholarship Sponsored by The Compleat Sculptor

In honor of its 25th Anniversary, The Compleat Sculptor, Inc. (TCS) is sponsoring an Art of Carving scholarship for one individual to participate in the 2020 Indiana Limestone Symposium. New York City-based TCS is one of the world’s largest sculpture suppliers, inspired by the founder’s mother – a sculptor, who struggled to find stone, tools and ancillary services to support her work.

The 2020 Scholarship entitles the winner to a full, seven-day session of immersive instruction in the art of carving limestone at the Symposium, including design, moving stone, splitting blocks, roughing out, using hand and pneumatic tools, and much more. Different instructors are featured each session. An introduction to using basic tools, roughing out, and working from a maquette or drawing is offered on the first day. The week continues with techniques for carving and basic principles of sculpting. Instruction is geared toward each participant’s skills, needs and level of proficiency. The scholarship includes up to 8 cubic feet of limestone per session (approximately 1,200 pounds), compressed air, electricity, water, forklift, snacks, beverages, lunch each day and an official Symposium t-shirt. Pneumatic and hand carving tools will be made available, as well, once the scholarship winner’s skill level is determined. Pneumatic tools are typically reserved for advanced stone carving students.
